how do i get the best sound out of my snare drum?
i have a 6 1/2 X 14 inch snare drum, a gretsch catalina. how would i get the best sound out of it, please tell what snare heads give a higher pitched focused sound with minimal ringing.
Heads make all the difference in the world. I'm partial to Evans heads, so that's what I will recommend. The snare-side head is very important. A cheap (stock) snare side head will not give you the best possible sound. Try this combo:
Snare side: Evans Hazy 300
Batter Side: Evans Genera Dry.
Couple of other things to watch out for and try:
1) Don't over tighten your snare wires. They're basically little individual springs. If you stretch them to the point where they don't spring back anymore (imagine straightening a slinky) then your sound will suffer greatly - no pop.
2) Ringing is not all bad. What you hear behind the drum kit is vastly different from what the audience hears. A little ring is a good thing - BUT -
3) If you absolutely hate ring, try a Moongel dampener. You can get a pack of them at any Guitar Center or online at musiciansfriend.com or samash.com. http://www.rtom.com/moongel.htm
