Imagine the day when you will finally shop for your own drum kit. The only thing in your shopping list is probably a beginner's drum set. It is perfectly understandable to get excited.
First and foremost, you may want to prepare anywhere between four hundred dollars to a thousand dollars for a beginner's drum set. If you do not have this amount for now, then you may buy a used set. Then you need to know some of the important considerations before buying.
* Start with a beginner's kit
You may start with a beginner's kit. These drum sets are designed for beginners like you. A starter drum kit has everything you will need to begin your journey. You may invest in another set and some accessories when you have gone a notch higher.
* A regular beginner's drum set
A regular beginner's set comes with a bass drum, a snare drum, a floor tom and two mounted tom toms. Cymbals are not included in the beginner's drum set. Drum manufacturers do not usually make cymbals. You may need to buy a cymbal kit.
* Hardware
Hardware is used to mean the stands, the pedals and the drum seat. A beginner's drum kit may not include the hardware. You may need to purchase the hardware separately. Buy a medium or professional quality bass drum pedal. You will want to invest on these pedals. The basic and beginner's pedals may break easily. You will also want to buy a good drumming chair. The throne will support you and take in the impact of every beat.
Before you buy your first drum set, do your research. Visit different stores and compare their products and prices. Stick to what you are comfortable with. Find a store with learned staff to help you with what you need.

Is $750 (USD) too much money for a used 7 yr old 6 piece Mapex M Series drum set with cymbals & hardware?
The set has not been played much in the last 4 years. The asking price includes the shells and all Mapex brand hardware - bass pedal, hi-Hat Stand/pedal, 2 tom stands and 4 tom mounts, 2 cymbal stands, a 20" Zildjian A Series ride cymbal (no damage), and the original starter "no name" 14" hi-hat and 16" crash cymbals, plus a basic throne. The Toms are 10, 12, 14, and 16" - and they are all suspend/stand mounted. Base is 22", and the snare 14 X 5.5". The shells are in good shape - there is only one "ding" on the base drum that scratched the paint. They are Red lacquer (not that the color matters...). All of the drum heads are used - Remo brand heads.
The set was purchased for approx $1200 new.

A bit high, I think. I'd offer $600 as a start and be willing to go to $675. At $750 there are better used kits generally available and even some decent quality brand new kits.
