Percussion ensembles have become ubiquitous in almost all genres of popular music today. Jazz, Pop, R & B, rock and roll, and many other genres are dependent on this versatile instrument in the rhythm section. In the industry of modern music, it is very rare to hear music without the incessant rhythm of drums.
The drums are some of the oldest instruments known to mankind, but not always had a place in Western music. For centuries, the battery is considered a tool of nature by many major European composers, and therefore they were not very common in the music of ages 17, 18 and 19. However, batteries have gained momentum in the early 20th century, thanks in largely to the popularity of a widely new style of music called jazz.
Percussion ensembles are unique in the world of music because they are a single instrument, but a collection of many instruments. A typical drum kit will consist of a drum, kick (bass) drum, a pair tom-toms, hi-hat and some cymbals. However, the combination of instruments can vary considerably depending on the tastes of the battery and the style of music played. Many drummers prefer small teams because they are easier to transport, while others prefer different options for a large battery.
Drum sets often include a collection of percussion instruments which often are not considered part of a modern drumming. Wooden blocks and cowbells are common to many Latin-jazz drummer and music.
